VANCOUVER - The Vancouver Canucks made Ryan Millers 300th NHL career win look easy.Miller reached the milestone as the Canucks downed the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1 on Tuesday night. It means I have been playing a while, said Miller. It feels good. Its a collection of a lot of good teams, a lot of good players over the years. Ill take a little moment to reflect. Its been a lot of fun. Just winnings fun and Ive gotten to do it quite a bit with some good guys. So Ill try and enjoy this. The Canucks (6-3-0) posted their third win in four games, while the Hurricanes (0-6-2) remained winless after their first eight games of the season. Carolina also remained without a victory in seven games in Vancouver since October 1999.Our guys were skating and pressuring the first option, said Miller, who recorded 29 saves as the Canucks were outshot 30-29. I could sit back and make reads. It makes the game a lot easier.Brad Richardsons first two goals of the season led Vancouver, with his second going into an empty net in the final minute of play.It was nice to get the zero off the board there, said Richardson. You get to that 10-game mark, you dont want to be sitting there with zeros.Linden Vey and Jannik Hansen, with the winner, also scored for the Canucks, who led 1-0 and 3-0 after the first and second periods, respectively.Jiri Tlusty broke Millers shutout bid during a scramble at the 11:05 mark of the third. We just didnt play heavy and strong enough to be able to break pucks out and go the other way, said Carolina captain Eric Staal, who earned an assist after missing five games with an upper-body injury. We just werent good enough.Vancouver went 1 for 3 on the power play while the Canes were blanked on the same number of man-advantage opportunities as they spent a lot of time defending Canucks penalty-killers.Richardson opened the scoring only 1:32 into an otherwise uneventful first period as he broke down the right wing, cut towards the goal and lifted a quick wrist shot over Carolina goalie Cam Wards glove. The third-line centre stood out after coach Willie Desjardins told his unit, which included Zack Kassian and Shawn Matthias, to get more physical. But Richardson was not impressed with his clubs overall effort. It wasnt our best game, to be honest, said Richardson. It was a little bit sleepy a lot of the times, but we scored timely goals and we won the game, so thats the big thing. However, Richardson was impressed with Miller. He kept us in the game, said Richardson. They had some good chances. Its too bad we couldnt get him the shutout.Vey put the Canucks ahead 2-0 on a power play 50 seconds into the second period. Playing the point, he skated in and fired in Vrbatas pass from the side of the net. The goal came after Daniel Sedin, standing alone in the slot, missed Vrbatas pass but the puck continued to Vey.Hansen increased Vancouvers lead to 3-0 at 18:39 of the second on a mid-air deflection of Yanick Webers point shot. Webers assist resulted after he kept an errant puck right on the blue-line and then flung it towards the net, denying Carolinas Jeff Skinner of a clear breakaway. They had a chance, we kept it in and we ended up scoring, so that was probably the difference in the game, said Desjardins. The Canucks will host Montreal on Thursday while the Hurricanes return home to face Arizona on Saturday.Notes: Vancouvers Henrik Sedin and Radim Vrbata extended their point streaks to five games as they assisted on Veys goal. … Defencemen John-Michael Liles (illness) and Ryan Murphy (lower-body injury) returned to the Hurricanes lineup after missing their last game in Edmonton. But winger Nathan Gerbe (lower-body) missed his fourth contest. … Vancouver winger Tom Sestito was scratched for the ninth consecutive game to start the season. … The game was the first of two meetings between Vancouver and Carolina this season. PAUL, Minn. - When the Minnesota Wild hired Mike Yeo as a first-time NHL head coach, he fit their criteria for a bench boss who could develop several top, young players. Yeo has undergone his own growth in that time, too, and the Wild were satisfied enough with the results on both fronts to make another commitment to him. After his three-year contract extension was finalized last weekend, Yeo appeared with general manager Chuck Fletcher at a news conference Friday to discuss the deal and the teams future. The Wild advanced to the second round of the playoffs for only the second time in franchise history, and Fletcher praised Yeos ability to help keep the players on an even keel during some challenging stretches as injuries piled up. "He improved by leaps and bounds, and its not just understanding that you have to make those adjustments. Its the confidence to make them, and the confidence to sell them to your team," Fletcher said, recalling their conversation from last summer about areas where both the Wild and Yeo could improve. In the final year of his contract, Yeo was in a precarious place after a six-game losing streak to finish 2013. But despite notable absences by Mikko Koivu, Zach Parise and the top two goalies, Yeo and his staff not only held together the group but guided a resurgence that transcended the regular season. "Id be hard-pressed to sit here and name one player that wasnt better now than what he was at the beginning of the year," Fletcher said, adding: "The funny thing: At the exact point in the year when you thought wed fall apart, we actually became a team. And theres a lot of work that went into that, and again Mike and his staff deserve a lot of that." Yeo, who will turn 41 next month, has a career record of 104-82-26, plus 7-11 in the playoffs.dddddddddddd Though Fletcher waited until June to address his status, Yeo said there was never a point at which he became nervous. Thats a hallmark of his, actually, as evidenced by his demeanour through and triumph over the losing streaks and fluke injuries of the 2013-14 season. Yeo gave four different goalies 10 or more starts each, and the carousel didnt stop spinning once the playoffs came. Darcy Kuemper and Ilya Bryzgalov both took turns, due to injury and performance, but the Wild beat Colorado 4-3 in a first-round thriller and gave Chicago fits until falling 4-2. "The team took on Mikes demeanour, and I think that helped us get through," Fletcher said. "Hey, were down 2-0. No big deal. They come back late and score? No big deal. We just kept finding a way to hang around and hang around until we could put the last shot in the net." Yeo showed a knack as a tactician during those series, too, making plenty of adjustments to his front lines that paid off against a pair of opponents in the Avalanche and Blackhawks that boast a lot of fast, skilled forwards. "The line switches, thats something I tried to make a conscious effort of at the start of the year, not only for me to grow as a coach but also for our team to get more used to it," Yeo said, adding: "But its always the players that make you look smart." Yeo said he didnt feel any more pressure to win this season than in his first one. He also pondered a question about when he felt the Wild truly clicked in the last few months before punting on the answer. "It never really gets to that point," he said, laughing. "I wish it did."
