The Vancouver Canucks (4-3) open a three-game homestand tonight against the Washington Capitals (4-1-2) at Rogers Arena. The Canucks return to action after a 7-3 loss in Colorado on Friday night. Henrik Sedin, Alex Burrows and Daniel Sedin had the Canucksgoals and Eddie Lack stopped 41 of the 48 shots he faced. TSN1040 has the Canucks and Capitals tonight beginning at 6:30pm pt. Ryan Miller is expected to get the start in goal after 31-save effort in St. Louis on Thursday. Otherwise it appears the Canucks will go with the same line-up they used in Denver. Ryan Stanton returned to skate with the group for the first time since getting injured in Edmonton on October 17th. Ten different Canucks have accounted for the teams last 11 goals dating back to an Alex Edler goal against Tampa Bay last Saturday (only Jannik Hansen has two in that span). The team has scored in the first minute of each of its past two games (Chris Higgins 41 seconds into Thursdays game in St. Louis and Henrik Sedin 10 seconds after the opening face-off in Denver). Henrik Sedin has been on the ice for 12 of the 22 goals the Canucks have scored this season. At the other end of the ice, Kevin Bieksa has been on for 12 of the 24 goals the team has surrendered. The Canucks 4-3 record after 7 games is the same as it was last season as is the goal differential at this stage (minus-2). On the farm, Jacob Markstrom made 27 saves for his third straight shutout as AHL Utica blanked the Toronto Marlies 4-0 last night. Markstrom is 4-0 on the season with a 0.25 GAA and a 99.1 save percentage giving up just one goal in his season debut. He has stopped 108 of 109 shots. He is currently riding a 232:13 shutout string which is 36:04 shy of the longest run in AHL history. And in the WHL, 2014 Canucks first rounder Jake Virtanen scored his first two goals of the season last night in Medicine Hat. He had 2+1=3 on the night and has 2+2=4 in two games since returning from off-season shoulder surgery. He is scheduled to play his first home game of the season tonight when Calgary hosts Prince George. The Capitals are here after a 3-1 victory in Calgary last night. Joel Ward scored twice and Braden Holtby made 20 saves for the win. The Capitals have gained a point in six of their first seven games with their lone outright loss a 3-2 defeat in Edmonton on Wednesday. Only Minnesota and Los Angeles have allowed fewer goals than the 13 Barry Trotzs squad has given up so far this season. At 7/25, the Caps have the third best PP in the NHL (28.0 per cent). Due in part to that success, the Capitals have spent the least time in the league on the power play this season (34:01). Alex Ovechkin has been held off the scoresheet in three straight games. He is five points shy of Peter Bondras franchise record for career points (825). Tonight marks just the fifth time Ovechkin has played an NHL game in Vancouver. He has scored in two of his previous four visits. Jason Chimera is set to play in his 800th career NHL game tonight. The Capitals did not skate this morning, so no word on who will get the start in goal tonight. DaMarcus Beasley Jersey . Mark Teahen scored the go-ahead run in the home seventh on an error by Scott Sizemore, who had knotted the game with a solo homer in the previous half- inning. He saluted the fans with his right hand, looking more relieved than happy. Maybe for good reason. Hammel snapped a four-start losing streak since being traded to Oakland and led the Athletics past the Tampa Bay Rays 3-0 on Tuesday night. "Felt awesome," Hammel said. "I wanted to come in and make an immediate impact. It didnt work out that way. But it goes to show you how good of baseball fans we have here." Hammel (1-4) allowed seven hits and four walks in 5 2-3 innings. He entered the game with a 9.53 ERA since the As acquired him and Jeff Samardzija from the Chicago Cubs on July 4. The right-hander said he worked in more breaking balls to keep hitters guessing. "Its a lot harder to hit when youre thinking of four different pitches instead of two," he said. Coco Crisp, starting for the first time since July 26, singled home a run in the fifth, and Nate Freiman hit an RBI double during a two-run sixth to spoil Drew Smylys debut with Tampa Bay. Smyly (6-10) gave up all three runs, seven hits and two walks, including one intentional, in 5 1-3 innings. The left-hander was traded from Detroit last week in the three-team deal that sent ace David Price to the Tigers. "I fought pretty good," Smyly said. "My pitch count got up there. I had a couple of deep counts. I missed my pitch against Freiman. Other than that, I thought I pitched well." Tampa Bay has lost three straight and five of six after an 11-1 stretch. The Rays never could crack Hammel, who pitched for Tampa Bay from 2006-08, or any of the pitchers the major-league leading As threw their way. Three relievers tossed scoreless ball before Sean Doolittle pitched a perfect ninth for his 17th save in 20 tries to preserve Hammels win. "That might be just what he needed," Doolittle said, "to get on a roll.&" DEFENSIVE AS Hammel escaped trouble in the third and fourth innings by inducing a pair of ground balls that led to double plays.dddddddddddd As shortstop Eric Sogard also snagged Ben Zobrists hard grounder and made a quick throw to nab Desmond Jennings at third base for the first out of the fifth. Sogard started at shortstop instead of second base because Jed Lowrie was nursing a bruised right index finger. "He really looked like he was comfortable," As manager Bob Melvin said. RAYS ERRORS It was a far different story on defence for the Rays. Curt Casali was called for catchers interference on Josh Reddicks grounder leading off the As eighth. Third baseman Evan Longoria threw way wide on a relay home in the sixth for another error that helped Derek Norris score from first on Freimans double. And Kevin Kiermaier tried to cut down Alberto Callaspo at the plate on Crisps single in the fifth but sailed his throw to the backstop from right field. "I always encourage guys if theyre going to throw it away, to really throw it away. So he takes instruction well," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "Really, though, when youre not scoring, those things get magnified." TRAINERS ROOM Rays: Outfielder Wil Myers, on the 60-day disabled list with a broken right wrist, went through an extensive workout and drills for the second straight day in Port Charlotte, Florida. The Rays could decide by the end of the week when Myers will begin his rehab assignment. Athletics: Lowrie (bruised right index finger) is day to day. First baseman Kyle Blanks (left calf injury) ran the bases and will do so again on Thursday before Oakland decides whether to send him out on a rehab assignment. ON DECK Rays: Jeremy Hellickson (0-1, 3.29) tries to snap his six-start winless streak, which dates to Sept. 4, 2013. Athletics: Sonny Gray (12-4, 2.59) goes in the series finale after winning AL Pitcher of the Month for July.
